Analytical Essay

Your assignment will be to look into a court case, a political issue, or a controversial issue taking place in society. You will look up numerous resources that discuss the issue you choose and write a paper that analyzes media bias regarding the presentation of your specific issue.
Different news stations and sources in the media tend to present different angles of the same occurrence in ways that paint a certain picture depending upon the stance that the station or the journalist has. Sometimes we can see particular word choice or other items such as rhetorical devices come into play as the journalism unfolds.
Your job is to compare and contrast articles/broadcasts from different sources. You will show the different opinions and bias that are presented based on criteria that you find in the articles or broadcasts. You will discuss these elements in depth to show how you established that they promote bias. What does this bias show you? What do these different articles want you to think or feel about the issue? How can you prove this using specific examples from the articles?
You can choose anything that has numerous sources reporting on it, and it does not necessarily have to be something that has happened within the past few weeks. It can be a bit older.  One approach to this may include looking at an issue presented by Fox News vs. CNN. These two mainstream media sources tend to be very biased in the way that they present information– with Fox News being more conservative and CNN being more liberal
o   DO
o   Describe the five W’s surrounding the issue so that the reader is perfectly clear on what the issue is before
you delve into your analysis of the bias within the resources.
o   Complete at least a 5 page paper.
o   Use MLA format and include a works cited page that lists at least four sources and does not count as one of
the five pages that is the original page limit.
o   If you are looking at media bias from two particular sources such as Fox News versus CNN, it would be ideal to find numerous articles from both Fox and CNN that discuss the same issue and try to find repetition in the bias presented. That is a way to meet all of your sources without having to stray too far from the topic if that is what you chose to do.
o   Discuss any rhetorical devices you see from the assigned video or any specific connotation that leads you to
believe that bias is present.
o   DO NOT
o   Use blogs or Wikipedia as sources
o   Insert your own opinion on the issue–you are only meant to examine bias present in the article
o   Spend a lot of time summarizing the issue in depth over the course of the paper. Explain the basics in your
introduction paragraph and include a few more facts throughout as needed so your reader understands. Use the
body paragraphs to dissect the journalist’s presentation of information.
