Throughout the course, we’ll spend a lot of time exploring psychological assessment and evaluating the use and soundness of specific tests. While we are learning about what makes a good test and the relevance of specific measures, the readings this week remind us that we need to understand assessment in the context of the test-taker.
Chapter 4 of the textbook introduces the topic of culturally informed psychological assessment. This term is defined as an approach to assessment that is attuned to the role of culture in the evaluation process or the interpretation of resulting data.
Discuss the concept of culturally informed psychological assessment.
Why is a consideration of culture so key to psychological assessment? And if it is so key, why has this factor been historically de-emphasized in the past?
What are the limits of being a “culturally informed” psychological assessor?
What else might you add (or take away) from the list of culturally informed “do’s” and “don’ts” that is presented at the end of Chapter 4? Explain your response.
