Corrections Code of Ethics

Directions: First, read Chapter 4 (pp. 107 – 116 and pp. 129-142 only) and Chapter 9 (pp. 313-331 only) in Stohr.  MUST USE ONE OUTSIDE SOURCE. Then, consider the following prompt:

You are a leading ethics expert in corrections. The warden of a local prison that is experiencing a lot of unethical behavior from correctional staff has asked for your help in addressing these problems at her institution. She has asked you to use your expertise to write a brief about ethics in corrections to help her understand the nature of unethical behavior in corrections and more importantly, what can be done to combat these issues. The brief should include all of the following: 

Definition of ethics
The different types of unethical behavior from correctional officers, including the most common forms of deviance
Factors that contribute to unethical behavior in correctional settings (e.g. individual factors, correctional officer subculture and socialization, organization-level factors and climate, etc.)
Explanation for why ethical behavior can be a challenge in correctional settings specifically (e.g. the fact that correctional facilities are hidden from public view and the fact that correctional officers have control over inmates)
Recommendations for how to prevent unethical behavior and promote ethical behavior in correctional settings
