Discuss and Debate: What Makes an Ideal Family?

07Sep 2021 by
What makes an ideal family? Who should hold the power in a marriage? These are questions that most likely will stir emotions within you as you think about them. In this discuss and debate, be prepared to back up your claims with evidence from your readings and the Exploration page

Instructions

Research the influences that shape working couples decisions when dividing housework and childcare. Specifically, sociologists use three theoretical perspectives to better understand the division of household labor:

Conflict theorists examine the unequal and changing power and sharing of resources between partners/spouses.

Functionalists examine how well or poorly the family unit functions to meet members needs.

Interactionists focus on how each partner holds contrasting meanings, experiences, and perspectives of their marriage.

After you have completed your reading and research, develop a post (minimum of 150 words) that addresses the following questions:

Provide your definition of marriage and family. What makes an ideal family?

Who should hold the power in a marriage? Use a theoretical perspective to support your response. Provide an example of how power in marriage has changed or may change over time because of social forces.

Consider variables such as gender, class, level of education, income differential, race, cultural background, and length of relationship/marriage in your discussion.

Support your ideas with information from at least two sources found in your readings and exploration materials, plus one outside resource. Cite your sources in APA Style. Need help with APA? Please refer to the CCCOnline APA Citation Toolkit.

After you post your initial message, respond to the posts of at least two other students. Response posts should further the discussion by adding educational concepts (detailed explanation or examples) and asking clarifying questions in a minimum of 75 words.
