A non-profit organization, environmental trade association, trade cooperative or another environmental NGO that advocates for or seeks to advance an environmental policy change or address a significant environmental challenge. While I’d prefer to have a marine focus for this, I’m willing to consider other options (such as regenerative farming practices) if there is a very strong interest in researching it. Contact me, in advance of starting the work, in order to discuss non-maritime initiatives.
c. Sources: For ideas, I would suggest considering some of the following sources: Marine Money, London Shipping Week, ShippingInsight, Capital Link, and CMA, TradeWinds, gCaptain, and MarEx and SUNY ESF. You may, of course, use any source to identify an organization and learn more about its operations, but these might be good starting points. All sources must be properly cited if integrated into the body of the report;
d. Scope: Be prepared to provide a thorough review of the technical, commercial and/or policy operations of the organization. While I’m hesitant to assign a specific length (the number of pages is usually an arbitrary figure that does not necessarily indicate the depth of quality or work), I understand that some guidelines are helpful. A paper should be absolutely no less than 5 pages long. Even then, it’s difficult to imagine that a subject can be thoroughly covered in that length, and I would strongly encourage prudent judgement when researching and writing the paper;
e. Contact – Whichever organization that you chose, you must attempt to contact them. Firsthand perspective is a valuable tool in both research and networking. If connecting directly with the organization does not work out (or, in the case of an environmental policy issue or initiative, there is not a single entity responsible) connect with another organization in the field (ie a research firm, trade association, etc). Some form of data or information cleaned from direct industry contact should be integrated into the paper. Once you’ve researched an organization and generated thoughtful questions, politely connect with them to see if they would be willing to share more information with you or discuss their current and future operations. I’m happy to help, but I’d suggest utilizing LinkedIn to identify key individuals who may be able to help with providing information for (or even, better, an interview!) for your report. NEVER ask for proprietary company information, and be grateful for any insight, perspective or information that a company is willing to share. I’m happy to further discuss this piece prior to you contacting them. Professionalism and gratitude is key (which I know you know).
f. Papers should at least include the following:
i. The marine environmental sector in which the organization operates, including identifying any direct and potential competitors or other actors in the sector;
ii. How this organization and its activities contribute to the net positive sustainability of the industry and of our society and how their implement sustainability within their own policies and practices;
iii. Approximate organization size, location(s) and general professional background of staff (environmental engineers, technical specialists, etc);
iv. The current business model of the organization, how that’s changed thus far and how it may (reasonably) evolve in the coming years. For start-ups or rapidly –evolving businesses/NGO’s, attempt to quantify their success rate to date as best as you can. If you’re choosing an NGO or advocacy organization, describe the principal focus areas of the organization, even if they address several policy initiatives;
v. A detailed review of the products and services portfolio offered;
vi. The organization’s supposed UVP (Unique Value Proposition) and additional opportunities that they may not yet integrated into their suite of products or services;
vii. A basic market forecast for the sector (business) or the policy initiative . This amounts to you providing a reasonable estimate of the market’s likely direction over the coming 2-ish years. Keep in mind regulatory barriers (or opportunities). You’re free to integrate formal, external data and analysis (such as from Poten or Clarksons), provided that it’s properly cited and that you offer some original analysis as well
