Genre: Literature Analysis
Length: Essay: 3-4 pages.
Points: Final Draft – 100 points.
Format: 12-point Times New Roman font, 1″ margins, double spaced, MLA formatting.
Assignment: Students should respond to the play Medea by Euripides with an argument about the play’s themes, symbols, or characters.
Remember that a thesis about literature needs to have an argument. That is to say, you have to make a claim that someone might disagree with, and so will require you to “prove” that your take on it is correct with appropriate citations of the text you are considering. For example, saying that “the play Medea is about a woman who is suffering” is not an argument. Most people who read the play would agree with you. An argument would need to further some point based on this – what is the source of her suffering, what would alleviate it, and what does it tell us that her suffering is not alleviated? It is in answering that final question that you would have an argument about the play.
This essay must be written in MLA citation style and include MLA citations for the play throughout, and an MLA works cited entry for the translation of the play we are reading in class. No other versions of this play should be cited.
In text citations should use line numbers whenever paraphrasing or citing directly. Citations of 4 or more lines of the play should be done in block quotation. 3 or fewer lines should be formatted with slashes between line breaks: “Now she hates her children. When she sees them, / there is no joy in her” (46-47).
