Grand Challenges in Entomology

Entomology, along with the other sub-disciplines of biology that center on a set of organisms (e.g. herpetology, ornithology, etc) is situated within “organismal biology.” Read the two attached papers on the grand challenges of organismal biology (GrandChallenge_OrganismalBiology.pdf and GrandChallenge_BlackLagoon_ICB.pdf).
Choose one of the primary research articles attached that were published in the last year and write a summary in 2 pages (double spaced). Describe the study (hypothesis, methods, main results), and evaluate its significance in terms of how the study relates to one of the GCOBs in Table 1 (image attached). This is the most intellectually challenging assignment of the semester, but is also the most rewarding. The goals of this assignment is understand in the broader intellectual context within which this specific experimental result is situated. It’s like understanding the intellectual roots. Current research doesn’t come from nothing – it’s part of a mosaic of ideas, and you’re trying to figure out where this one tile fits in. Once you master this skill, you can apply it to any discipline.
