How Important is Mental Health Literacy? Options Menu: Forum

Dr. Lisa Fitzpatrick’s “Dr. Lisa on the Street” video (Week 5 folder) reminds us of the critical role of health literacy, the ability to understand, communicate and effectively use health information, in managing our health.  Studies of mental health literacy have consistently found that low levels of knowledge of mental health and mental health treatment are associated with higher level of untreated mental health conditions, greater stigma regarding people with mental illness and lower use of mental health services.
For this discussion board we will do an field study of mental health literacy in our communities.
1) Below are two questions on two of the common mental health conditions, depression and binge eating disorders.  Ask 4 people in your community, who have not majored or minored in psychology course or not mental health professionals, these questions and note their responses.  You may test anyone in your community, including friends and family members,as long as your respondents have had no coursework or training in mental health.

Also note each respondent’s demographic characteristics such as age, gender and ethnicity.
After your respondent has given an answer, then you can provide them with the accurate answers provided below.

2) report your findings and your reactions/reflections on them here.
