Human Nature

Mencius and Tagore believed human nature was good at inception but it needs cultivation, like sprouts (Mencius), to grow into beautiful plants.  Neglected, or used for unwholesome purposes, it would grow into a noxious weed, or become selfish and evil (Tagore).
Contrary to them, Hunzi thought that human nature is “Eeee” (yucky), meaning nasty, repugnant, and selfish from inception, always grabbing for things for oneself, and therefore it requires constant work to create something beautiful and worth admiring, like a beautiful pottery made out of a lump of clay, or a beautiful sculpture made out of twisted wood. Hunzi thought Mencius’ vision of a human being cultivating inborn good tendencies is dangerous because it leaves us complacent to what we are already predisposed to do instead of challenging us to try to shape ourselves into completely new and different selves.
Question: What do you think? Which vision is closer or better for individuals and society. Trying to push ourselves and others to explore new things  (Hunzi), or just cultivating the good tendencies and aptitudes that we are born with (Mencius & Tagore). (Xunzi of course would deny that we are born with anything worth cultivating, we are an ugly mess at birth).
Engage philosophers in arguments. If you agree with them say why, if you don’t, say why not.
