Lie Detection and Demeanor,

As humans, we make mistakes each day. Our memories may fail, or we may have the best intentions but we ask leading questions that reveal our personal biases. But in the case studies I am asking you to investigate these simple human mistakes have long term consequences for real people.
In each video in this series, a leading expert discusses a particular way in which a human makes a mistake that can lead to a wrongful conviction. Those mistakes may be the result of our malleable memories, or our inability to process all stimuli in a stressful situation. Sometimes we become blinded to facts or evidence that might impact the validity of our beliefs about a particular suspect or piece of evidence. Under certain circumstances, we can come to accept as true something we know to be false.

Instructions for Assignment

Please take the time to watch these 7 videos to learn about the Major Human Factors or causes of wrongful convictions.

Choose a single case from the Innocence Project Archives to write about. Click this link and search the case files here:

Learn the details of the cases original trial as they unfolded before your individuals case was retried. Make sure you understand and explain WHY their case was reviewed again and for what reasons they were set free or exonerated, whichever the case may be.

Identify at least three or four of the following human factors that lead to wrongful conviction in your chosen case. Choose the case you write about carefully, so you have enough information to write about. Include thorough descriptions of each of those definitions to educate the reader about what they mean. Then give details about how that error was made in the investigation.

Explain what evidence (maybe DNA evidence) led to the innocent man or woman to have their case retried and then finally their conviction overturned. Remember, in some cases, the innocent individuals may have died before their case was retried and they were exonerated posthumously (after death).

Use MLA format (DOUBLE SPACED). Include in-text citations in the BODY of the paper. Use at least 3 reliable scholarly sources besides your textbook. There should be 4 if you include your textbook as a source. This paper should be 2-3 pages (or at least TWO FULL pages) long.
