Le Mozart Essay MUSIC

Do not use any other source to complete this assignment. Do not go to the various internet sites related to this documentary for any additional information (transcriptions of spoken dialogue, correct spellings of names or places, biographical information about persons mentioned in the documentary, information about the musical compositions performed in the documentary, etc.).   You are to confine your essay exclusively to what you see, hear and think about what you have seen.
Throughout the semester we have been listening to music originating in Western Europe. However, we have not had the opportunity to hear much music composed by Classical composers of African descent.
“Le Mozart Noir” (“The Black Mozart”) is a documentary based on the life of Joseph Boulogne (aka St. George). His father owned a plantation in Guadeloupe and was of European ancestry. His mother was an enslaved African. St. George’s father took both his son and his son’s mother to Paris.  His goal in doing this was to give his son the opportunity to live a life other than that of an enslaved person. He wanted St. George to have the freedom to develop whatever talents and abilities he might possess. This would not have been possible for St. George to do as an enslaved person in the New World.
The list below provides a possible list of talking points that you might want to use in your essay.  You may also have other ideas: Feel free to include them in your essay!
In spite of everything that he managed to accomplish, was he still subjected to the same racial attitudes and prejudice that people of color experience in today’s world
Did his struggles as an artist remind you of similar experiences that musical artists to whom you listen may have encountered in their attempts to achieve fame
Why do you think that this still goes on in the arts
Was he given the level of respect that he deserved based on the level of his talent
What is your opinion of the music that you heard in the documentary
Does it compare favorably or negatively to Classical music that you’ve heard
Remember: Much of the documentary (and St. George’s life) takes place during the “Age of Enlightenment” in Europe. Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were also in France during this time period. The French Revolution also occurred during this era.
You may also include anything that you find to be of interest or important in you essay.
·               When writing about the artist featured in the documentary, please refer to him as either Chevalier St. George, St. George or Joseph Boulogne! “Le Mozart Noir” is simply the name used to compare him to the Austrian composer, W.A. Mozart.
The focus of your essay should not be to retell and recount (in order!) all the biographical details of his life as shown in the documentary. For example:
You want to focus on the larger picture (see “We Want To Look At St. George ….”). You may also add any other thoughts that you have about what you saw.
