This week’s readings focus on the idea that leadership is contextual – philosophy, politics, religious beliefs, culture, values, and race influence perceptions of leadership, and determine the effectiveness of demonstrated leadership traits and behaviors. Context is important to survival, personally and professionally. When you hear about a leader who is successful in one organization, yet fails dismally in another, context is frequently the reason.
For example, a woman who accommodates a client demand to deliver a product ahead of schedule may be perceived as being “soft” or “client focused”, depending on the organizational culture. In some Asian cultures, a leader who discusses a problem with a subordinate is generally perceived as “weak”, whereas in the United States, leaders who share problems with employees are generally considered to be “participative” and effective.
Demonstrate your understanding of the ways in which leadership is culturally contextual by completing TWO EXERCISES (both can be submitted together in one paper):
The Leadership Challenge: Juggling Cultures on page 50 in your Nahavandi (2015) textbook:
(SEE ATTACHMENTS)
Be sure to discuss the importance of paradigms (from our Lecture Notes) and how they apply to this exercise as well.
(SEE ATTACHMENTS)
AND
2. Exercise 2-2: Proverbs as a Window to Leadership on page 52 in your Nahavandi (2015) textbook.
(SEE ATTACHMENTS)
Discuss any six of the twelve proverbs listed in the exercise (the student should choose which six proverbs to discuss).
In describing implications for leadership, consider the meaning of that proverb, and indicate what it tells us that leaders must do, in order too effectively lead in that culture.
Apply theories of organizational cultural from Chapter 2 of the Nahavandi (2015) textbook that you feel are relevant (e.g., Hall, Hofstede, GLOBE, etc.). In doing so, discuss which specific dimensions from the theory may apply.
