Modernist Poetry: Resisting Realism

TS Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is a poem that pushes back against Realism. Make an argument for the ways Eliot—a Modernist—is resisting and/or challenging the techniques of Realism. Support your argument with specific evidence from the text.
Some questions to consider: Who is speaking? Where does this poem take place? What unearthly elements are included in this poem? What closure (or thereof) does the poem offer at the end?
 Paper requirements/expectations:

The A paper:1. Meets all minimum requirements (page/word length, answers my questions, and is organized like an essay with an introduction, a thesis, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion).2. Is free of grammatical errors.3. Provides ample evidence from the texts to support your argument (do this through quotes, paraphrases, and, whenever you quote or paraphrase, by providing the line or page number).4. Reaches some new realizations about the texts you’ve read. I want you to surprise even yourself.5. Shows mastery of the text discussed.6. Has good sentence variation (long sentences, short sentences, complex sentences, simple sentences).

Your response paper should answer one of the questions below. Successful papers are thoughtful and well organized by offering a thoughtful and informed argument which relies on examples from the narratives or poems. Have a clear thesis statement in your introduction that describes your position. Use quotations from the texts to explain and illustrate your ideas. Analysis is most important here. We’re interested in seeing how you think about the poem on the page. Think: “quote sandwich.” We are interested in how well you argue and support your opinion; please do not consult outside sources, since this is about your answers, ideas, and interpretive abilities.
