As noted, you will be watching your choice of one of three movies (either Fern’s interview, the ‘blue zone’ journey or the movie on middle adulthood) as part of our course materials, and will submit a brief reflection paper on your choice of one of these movie(s) (see syllabus). Specifically, you are to watch your choice of movie by clicking the links that are provided. You will then spend a paragraph summarizing the movie(s) of your choice. Next, you will apply knowledge that you have gathered from the course to the movie. You will select two concepts that are demonstrated in the movie and define them, and discuss how the movie is either a good (or poor) example of these two concepts/ topics (examples could be intimate relationships, or aging, but it is only limited by the topics that come up in the movies). You should spend a paragraph on each of the two concepts (defining the concept and applying them to the movie). Finally, you will include two pieces of empirical research (one for each concept) that address your chosen topics from the movie (either supporting or refuting it) and summarize the article’s findings in approximately half a page for each article.
For most students, the biggest struggle is finding empirical sources (sources where data were collected), but it doesn’t have to be complicated at all. If you’re not sure how to find empirical research on your two chosen topics, you may call one of our reference librarians, and they will talk you through accessing Genesee’s online database and obtaining an empirical piece. If you’re still uncertain if the piece of research you’ve found is empirical in nature, feel free to email me the abstract for review.
When complete, your paper should be approximately five pages of writing long, and include a reference page in APA style for your two empirical sources. The page limit does not include the reference or cover page. Realize that longer papers are not going to impress me – please keep to the assignment.
Again, as noted in the syllabus, you are required to complete one paper, and that paper is worth 15% of your course grade. You may submit drafts early for feedback. You may also choose to write a second paper on the other remaining movie(s) for extra credit in the course. Any questions, let me know!
