Consider the relationship between civil liberties and domestic security in the United States. Why do you think that our Founding Fathers thought it was more important for the individual citizen to have more rights than that of the government? Are civil liberties an important topic in today’s news? Why?

I certainly believe that the Founding Fathers wanted the limit power of the federal government. So, the Founding Fathers wanted to make sure that the new government system of the United States would not allow one person to seize power and become a king of sorts. Because freedom is based upon scale of power. Its common sense the more power the government holds the less power freedom the individual holds over their own lives. Likewise, the more power freedom the individual holds over their own lives the less power the government would hold.
When I think of civil liberties, I think of those rights documented in the US Constitution with particular focus on the first 10 amendments known as the Bill of Rights But now we as the people of this nation we have more threats like terrorism, cyber-attacks, domestic, etc. Yes, civil liberties are paramount of course with certain restrictions now. It seems inconsistent to me that personal liberties should be limited in the United States for national security reasons but there seems to be a trend in that direction. It seems to me that Americans have been willing to relinquish some degree of their personal freedoms in exchange for what we perceive to be better protection from their government. This probably not healthy for the democracy in the long run and I believe other solutions should be studied before disregarding some freedoms Americans have been used to enjoying.
In conclusion, there is going to be very little progress in any discussion in which people think absolutist terms. I don’t want to use the clichés like reasonable balance because while clearly true that phrase tends to be used by those who would restrict personal liberties far more than I am inclined to do.
