THIS IS NOT AN ESSAY. THIS IS AND SHOULD BE WRITTEN IN DISCUSSION FORMAT. I PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE AT THE END. (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY)

1) Relate a time when you either personally experienced or witnessed a family member, a friend, or someone else experienced the tolls of “emotion work” on the job that went below the “surface-level” (faking emotions to make people happy). Is the type of emotion work they experience commiserate with the pay they received?
2) Answer the following questions: In what ways are expectations and increased demands of “emotion work” doing harm to today’s workers? What are some potential solutions? When (if any time) is emotion work okay? What are the limits?

**********THE WEBSITE WILL TAKE YOU TO THE ARTICLE YOU NEED TO ANSWER THE QUESTION.
HERE IS AN EXAMPLE ON HOW TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS: The concept of emotion work has been a consistent theme in my life. When I was younger I worked in a fast paced, high stress operations center. Despite the extremely emotional nature of the work, internalization of feelings was actually an unhealthy way of handling the work because there was so much trauma. So rather than allowing emotions, the culture was to turn emotions outward towards peers or callers. The compensation was fair enough for the work at the beginning, but once the maximum pay grade is reached and you have been handling all this trauma for years on end, it stops being enough. In the end, it was not enough for me because I developed PTSD and had to retire, which created a whole new set of stressors for me.
I think that COVID has caused an increase in the requirement of emotional work, especially for those listed in the so called “essential” lines of work. This is evident with the large number of people now seeking emotional support through therapy and the mass exitus from many of these positions. For many in the “essential” businesses, the compensation may not be worth the emotional strain of feigning happiness everyday during a global pandemic. Add to that any additional strain such as being a minority and the work becomes overwhelming.
In my opinion, the only solution would be to change social expectations surrounding emotion work in a more humanitarian direction. I believe that as a whole, American culture has been crying out for this very heavily the past two years. However, it requires everyone to look inward and do their personal work. And for some, this may not be a reality.
