our first paper is a critical essay that will allow you to explore the relationship between media and culture. For tips to help you get started, watch the video Tips for Your First Writing Assignment.

Review MLA style and the general information in Hacker. Be sure you understand what a thesis statement is and how to use one in an academic paper. Students are often unsure of how to incorporate quotes and citations into their papers using “signal phrases” and in-text citations.
Use PRIMARY RESEARCH (your own scholarly observation and study of the media you select) to analyze content, messages and embedded cultural values.
Use SECONDARY RESEARCH (textbooks, academic articles, library database, Web sites, etc.–primarily academic sources) and at least three examples that support and illustrate the view/position you have taken on your chosen topic. Please use in-text citations and a Works Cited (Links to an external site.) page as shown on this link and explained in detail by Hacker.
Review Turnitin in Canvas for students. All papers in this course will use Turnitin (Links to an external site.) for submissions.
Develop a narrow thesis relevant to the course on one of the following general topics: advertising, popular music, television, news, Internet, etc. How does a specific aspect of this form of media convey U.S. culture? Support your argument or perspective with examples.
For an example of a possible thesis statement for this short paper: “The onslaught of negative election commercials aired on TV prior to November 3, 2020, conveyed a horrendous image of American culture and values today.” For this short paper, you could discuss the content/messages of one candidate (your own observations/primary research) and add one “expert” opinion about the influence of advertising on voters from a journalist or text.)
State your view as a THESIS STATEMENT (Links to an external site.) in the first paragraph, and use examples and research to support your perspective. Please remember: A “TOPIC” IS NOT A “THESIS.”
Your paper must be at least five pages plus a WORKS CITED page; no cover page and no bibliography, please.
Follow MLA style per Hacker. Review the Writing Guidelines, Written Assignment: Form and Format, and Hacker for additional suggestions in structuring your paper. Proofread carefully and use spell check and grammar check.
For additional writing help, submit your paper to Webster’s Online Writing Center a few days before the due date and let me know that you have done so.
