Power Point – presentation guide
·      A summary of your presentation, not a presentation
·      Think what type of audience is in front of you
·      A structure of your presentation – you don’t have to follow the format of a journal article
·      Don’t copy tables or statistical output. Instead, summarize the findings or present the most important part of the table/output
·      Avoid equations and elaborate statistics. Simplicity
·      Short titles
·      No whole paragraphs
·      4 -6 bullet points per slide. Relevance
·      Font size no less than 16. A regular font – Arial or Times New Roman or Calibri. Don’t use all capital letters. If you can’t fit the text – don’t reduce the size of font but rather reduce the number of words
·      Be careful about colors. Rather go conservative: white/light with frame than put colors that make the font less visible. Avoid moving objects or graphics, illustrations to make a joke
·      Don’t dim bullet points or parts of tables, charts etc.
·      You need to have enough information on slides to talk about your work
·      But you shouldn’t be skipping through the slides (if you have too much information)
·      Spelling! Don’t rely on spellcheck. Common problems: it’s – its, form – from, whole – hole, staff – stuff
·      Overall, your presentation should be professional. Keep consistently the same style and format
·      Finish your presentation either with the last slide or the title slide — with your name and contact information
·      Approximately 1 slide per minute. 10 minute-presentation – approximately 10 slides. Title slide: short title, your name and affiliation. At the end – references (can be selected references) and the last slide – your contact information (unless you choose to go back to the first slide)

Power Point – presenting at a conference
·      The first impression is very important. Dress appropriately. Start talking with confidence. Be enthusiastic
·      Stand to present
·      Don’t hide behind the podium
·      Don’t read from your notes or from the slides
·      Your power point slides should be ready on the computer before the session starts. You shouldn’t look for your presentation on computer or try to figure out things during your presentation time. If any problems occur, be professional about it. Have a backup plan (such as a printout of your presentation)
·      Don’t walk in front of the projector. Chose one spot and stay there. If using pointer, don’t face the screen and ignore audience
·      Some eye contact with everybody in the audience
·      When answering a question, start responding to the person who asked you the question and then address the whole room
·      Project your voice into the room. Make sure everybody can hear you. Don’t rush. Gesture – small if any. Be confident
·      Practice. Practice in front of others. Run through your slides few times
·      Practice timing!! Don’t go over time. Don’t skip slides
·      Questions. Answer honestly

·      Finish on a slide with your name and contact information
