Grading Rubric for the Essay
15 points- Spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation
10 points- MLA format
15 points -Paragraph quality/structure ( including topic sentences and transitions)
60 points for following the guidelines for writing a process analysis paper. These guidelines are:
A. An Introductory paragraph that has an 1.attention getter ( hook- a quote, question or situational story for gaining readers attention 2. A clearly identifiable thesis that identifies the process, indicates its result and tells the reader why you are analyzing it.
This paragraph should be specific about the type of process being analyzed- Directive – how to make or do something or Explanatory – how something works.
Example: You cannot understand how the Florida citrus industry works without understanding how fresh orange juice gets processed into concentrate.
This thesis clearly tells the reader what process is being analyzed–making concentrate from fresh oranges, its end result–orange juice concentrate, & why it is being analyzed –to understand the Florida citrus Industry.
B. Putting the steps in order: If the process is linear such as backing a car out of a garage, start with the earliest point in time and move forward chronologically. If the process does not follow a chronological order, try arranging the steps from most important to least important or least important to most important.
C. Use Appropriate Transitions-moving from one step to another requires clear transitions such as -next, from there, then, after five minutes, etc
D. Use Appropriate Pronouns: In an explanatory process analysis (How something works) you will write about the process in third person( he, she, it, they). In a directive process analysis, by contrast, you are telling the reader directly how to do something, so you should typically use the second person ( you).
E. Concluding the process analysis: The process analysis is not complete until it explains how the process ends and the significance of that result.
