She is good at reading and reads two for me everynight.”Question 2: What makes reading enjoyable for you?Answer: “I like finding things in the pictures and seeing the story”Question 3: With whom do you read? Does reading with that person help you read more?Answer: “My mommy and daddy and Hendricks” (Twin brother). Second part: “(Yes) we read every night. Lots of books”Question 4: Do you like when your teacher reads you books in the classroom? Why/why not?Answer: “yeah, because I like the story, especially the ones about pirates.Question 5: What challenges do you face while reading?Answer: “The really long words that are too long”.Question 6: Are you good at picking books for yourself? What can an adult do to help you choose books?Answer: “Yes, but I like the books that Hendo (brother) picks out more. He picks good books.” “They can help me see the shelf to get a book”…”I like when they read slowly.”Question 7: what are your favorite books to read?Answer: “My favorite book to read is the funny one with the furry trees.(The Lorax).Question 8: Why?Answer: “I like that it is about saving the Earth and protecting the trees.”Question 9: Why is it important to read well?Answer: ”Mom says that when I read better, I can read the big books like her. I want to read the big books like mom.”Question 10: What do you learn from reading?Answer: “I learn about animals and the Earth, and I really like learning about the ocean animals. My favorite is the shark.”Reflection: As I was interviewing the young girl I nanny for, I was able to get a glimpse of what reading means to her. Reading is a chance for her family to come together through imagination and education. It is also a way for her to experience different life lessons and morals through both fiction and nonfiction. This five year old girl is limited on screen time and uses the world of books to fill her need for imagination and fantasy. She is extremely passionate about reading and wants to examine every page. I have noticed in my time babysitting her, that she will gain and retain information that is both amusing and educational.
