Finding middle ground on abortion

Abortion is a heated political issue. For some voters, it is the main issue that drives who will get their vote. But even though abortion is a divisive issue, few Americans take an absolutist position on the issue. According to Pew Research (2019), only 27% of Americans think that abortion should be legal in ALL cases and only 12% think it should be illegal in ALL cases. That means that 60% of Americans take a non-absolutist position on abortion, thinking that it should be either legal (34%) or illegal (26%) in most, but not all, cases. This discussion will provide an opportunity to explore whether we can find a middle (or common ground) case on abortion policy.

Instructions and Questions: Initial post

In preparation for this discussion, read the following:

Chapter 4
Finding Middle Ground on Abortion. David OBrien, Commonwealth, Aug 13, 2020
I Had a Late Term Abortion. Margot Finn. Slate. Feb 7, 2019
What Happens if Roe v. Wade is Overturned. Bui et al, New York Times, Oct. 15 2020
1. David O’Brien argues that Pro-Life and Pro-Choice extremists dominate the abortion debate, to our detriment. Explain his argument. Do you agree with his argument? Why or why not?

2. Margot Finn describes her heart wrenching experience of terminating her pregnancy in the seventh month. Describe your reaction to her experience. What did you learn from reading her testimonial? Did it impact your personal perspective on abortion policy?

3. In your opinion, what do you think is the best approach to abortion policy? Do you support the adoption of the Massachusetts Roe bill in Wisconsin? If yes, why? If not, what do you think would be the best abortion policy for Wisconsin? Do you think Roe should be overturned, leaving abortion policy to be determined at the state level? Or do you think Roe should remain settled law? Describe and explain.
