Success is not final; Failure is not fatal: It is not the courage to continue that counts

“ Success is not final; Failure is not fatal: It is not the courage to continue that counts”(Winston S. Churchill). Born to an Ethiopian mother and a Puerto Rican father my life has been full of culture. My name is Etopia Delgado, and my name represents a culture. My mother wanted to give me a name that would set me apart from everyone else but she also wanted to give me a name that represents my culture, she named me after the country our family is from Ethiopia My last name Delgado is a very common Hispanic name I carry it with pride for my Puerto Rican side of my heritage. When I was seven years old my mother decided to move my younger brother and I to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where we lived with our grandparents. My grandparents enrolled me in one of Addis Ababa’s most prestigious boarding schools named the Greek School. Living there and learning to embrace a culture that was very foreign to me made me realize that we were now living in a third-world country and it helped inspire me to want to be better so I can help people in need.

Living there I learned to speak the main language Amharic and also learned the language of Ancient Greek. Living in a place where people spoke English but not very well made me develop a new appreciation for the English language. Whenever my mother visited she would always bring me books to read. I’m a natural bookworm as I love to read. When I was in the fourth grade we were given assignments about colleges and universities. The teachers wouldn’t tell us the names of the schools so we had to pick based on logos or mascots, I chose the mascot of a brown bobcat with a purple background. My teachers revealed to me that I had chosen New York University. Taking the time to do all the research on NYU allowed me to have an enormous Interest at a young age and desperately wanted my college experience right in New your city. Looking at all the majors and programs it felt as if this school was just the right fit for my taste and was inspiring to visit the campus.during my sophomore year of high school I took a field trip to tour the campus and see the school in person for the first time and meet all the people and I felt excited and felt this is where I belong. I think that I should go to NYU because I will do what ever it takes to achieve my goals in my dream school since young child and no room for disappointment .Itmay not look like it at first but I can assure you I think I bring a lot to the table. I am a worldly traveled person. Watching My mother’s journey as a single mother who works hard to provide for me and my brother and is also going to college has given me the motivation in life that there is nothing that comes easy but with hard work everything is capable!!! I believe and am determined to make her proud and myself proud.I’m truly grateful and had the privilege to learn and experience many different cultures from Africa to Europe. I am a generally very creative person with an outlet. I am a very big lover of the arts and my main passion is writing. Writing is something that comes so naturally to me and going to school where I could improve on my writing and get better would be a dream. My goal would be to write a book and then adapt that book into a T.V series. If I get accepted into NYU I would major in Creative Writing with a minor in Drama. These majors work best for me because they will help prepare me for my future career as a writer and an actress. If I am accepted to NYU I think I would represent the school the best way I can, I’m creative, hardworking and most of all can take the pressure of university. I am mature as an elder sister to my young brother and well oiled and ready to start My adult life at New York University if given the chance.
