the scarlet letter essay

06Jan 2022 by

“The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread.” (Hawthorne 174)

Hester undergoes many, many hardships in exile; just like Hawthorne suggests of the Romance, she is looked down upon, dismissed by the public, and exiled to the haunted, fantastical woods beyond the practical everyday reality of Salem/the Novel. And yet, if we read closely, just as with the Romance, she is also afforded certain opportunities for growth and understanding in the woods that she never would have had access to within the confines of Puritanism.

In a well-constructed essay of 750-950 words, using a minimum of three quotations from the novel, please respond to the following question: what kinds of opportunities for growth and understanding are opened up for Hester Prynne in her exile that would have likely been unavailable to her had she remained within the rigid (physical and moral) boundaries of the Salem community?

Please follow the following guidelines:
The hook of your introduction should reference either the Preface to The House of the Seven Gables or “The Custom-House” in order to frame your argument about Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter.
Your body paragraphs should use effective topic sentences, fluidly integrate textual evidence, and offer actual analysis (not just restatement or summary) of this evidence.
Your essay should be five paragraphs, including an introduction and conclusion.

Three quotations from the novel please.
