United States History before 1877

Over the course of the semester, I have argued that four historical forces shaped the developmentof the United States before 1877. These were: 

1. The migration of Europeans and Africans to the Western Hemisphere and theirsubsequent territorial expansion throughout North America; 
2. The rejection of monarchy and the subsequent (albeit incomplete) democratization ofpolitics and society; 
3. The rise of a capitalist economic system and the subsequent (and recurring)reorganization of Americans daily lifewhatever their social status or region; and 
4. The rise and fall of New World slavery and the subsequent effort to create a multi-racial,democratic social order in the shadow (and then wake) of human bondage. 

In this project, you will choose the one force that you think was most responsible for thedevelopment of the United States before 1877 and formulate an argument that defends yourchoice and demonstrates why you think the others were relatively less important. Keep in mindthat there is really no correct answer for this assignment. Each of the four choices outlined aboveare valid options. 

That said, there are correct and incorrect ways of completing this assignment, and you shouldtherefore play close attention to the requirements.
