Visual Art Project
Guidelines:
Simply put, you are to make a work of art in your assigned “style”. Your piece may be any size of your choice. A recommended size (if you will be painting or drawing or making a collage is 16″ x 20″; it is only a suggestion). You may use any materials and process(es) of your choice (charcoal, paint, collage, digital, mixed-media, photography, ceramics, etc). You will be e-mailing me your visual project and I am looking forward to viewing and enjoying it!
The main parameter is that you complete the project in such a way that you address the style assigned to you. All of the styles are of the past. You are encouraged to approach your style by giving it a contemporary sensibility (in other words, try to “speak” about issues of our times while simultaneously utilizing a past style/approach).
The assignment will be due on the second to last week of classes before final week. I will provide you with the exact day that your project is due for class presentation. Although we will cover all of the styles through lectures and is covered in the textbook (and in numerous, almost endless, online sites), please do not wait for me to discuss your assigned style.
It is your responsibility to research your assigned style.
I will be more than happy to assist you in your research and brainstorming.
Please contact me if you need assistance, ideas and/or inspiration.
The following is the list of art styles for the Final Visual Art Project.
You will be assigned one of them:
Neo-Classicism
Romanticism
Realism
Impressionism
Surrealism
Abstraction
Pop Art
Upon turning in your visual art project, please answer the following:
1 – How does your work specifically relate to your assigned style?
__________________________________________________________________
2 – Why did you choose to work the way you did (painting, collage, photo, digital media, etc.) ?
__________________________________________________________________
3 – Have you ever worked this way before?

This project is worth a total of 200 points.
The grading is straightforward with this project… either you worked on it and submitted it, or you did not.
If you completed it, you will earn the total points (unless there is some major problem with your project in which case I will inform you).
An example of a problem with your project is that you did NOT address the style
assigned to you or it is vague and unclear in its style, technique, approach, , etc.
If you would like to, you may decide to complete this project by completing a typed 6-10 page paper.
For the research, you must discuss the predominant artists, historical, socio-economic context, technological innovations, patronage, etc., that contributed to the development of the art style and movement. Also, please make sure you provide references when and if you quote, copy-and-paste, or otherwise “borrow” what someone else has said/written/stated.
