Discussion: Social Change Implications of Research Scenario
For some, research may seem like an obscure term that evokes images of scientists in lab coats who produce data written for and consumed by other scientists. However, research can have far-reaching implications for individuals, groups, and society at large, extending far beyond the confines of a lab or the pages of an academic journal. One example of such research is a seminal study on the bystander effect. Researchers, Darley and Latan (1968), became interested in the behaviors of bystanders after a woman in New York City was murdered and, of the 38 bystanders who looked on from their apartment windows, none called the police for help. Therefore, they conducted an experimental study on the behaviors of participants (bystanders) in response to a victim in a fictious emergency and found that participants who thought they were alone with the victim intervened more quickly than participants who thought there were other bystanders present. Darley and Latan concluded that diffused responsibility explained the findings, that is, bystanders feel less responsible for intervening when in the presence of others because they assume someone else will intervene. Since their initial study, the bystander effect has been studied extensively and has informed bullying and sexual harassment training programs, making schools and workplaces safer for students and employees.

Quantitative Research Design: Identify a specific quantitative research design. Do not use broad terms, such as survey design, cohort design, longitudinal design, causal-comparative design, cross-sectional design, and so on. Briefly describe how the selected design fits your scenario.

Quantitative Sampling Strategy: Be specific.

Quantitative Data Collection Method: Be specific.

Variables: Briefly describe each of your variables to include their range of measured values, level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio), and identification as either an independent or dependent variable.
