In this course, you will be writing analyses of the memoirs by Junger and Graves assigned in this course. Your papers need to be in Times New Roman 12pt font, double-spaced, with 1 inch margins. At the top of the first page, you need only your name, date, and the title of the work your header should not take up more than of the page. The paper will need to be well written, with a thesis, argumentative points, and a conclusion. Please cite specific lectures and page numbers when dealing with the books, while using the Turabian format which the instructor will cover in class. Each review should be 5-7 pages in length. You can examine them in any order you so choose.
The goal of the assignment is to examine one of the two memoirs and write an analysis of what the man experienced due to the First World War. You are free to focus on whatever interests you, be it time at the front, time in the rear, coming to terms postwar, whatever fascinates you. You can also examine the entire work and do a critique of the survivors entire experience. In addition to simply explaining what the soldier went through, it will be important and necessary to discuss some deeper elements are there common themes? Why does the soldier react that way? Does his experience seem common? Are there specific things that the writer refers to multiple times? While the assignment is like a standard academic book review, the goal is also to see how each authors own private war compares with the larger conflict. Be sure to give the authors experiences context by referencing and discussing what we cover in class, as well as what is found in your textbook and the document reader. AGAIN YOU WILL NEED TO USE THE TEXTBOOK AND READER FOR THE ASSIGNMENT.
NOTE: There is not a wrong way to do this assignment it is fairly open ended, so feel free to take it in whatever direction you wish. Be as descriptive as possible, and be sure to back up all claims with as much evidence as you can. There is not necessarily a right or wrong way to do the assignment, but your grade will reflect how well you read the books and how you interpret the information presented. The more in-depth you read the book, the better your grade will be. Further, you should include Turabian citations with the work, providing examples to back up your assertions. YOU SHOULD NOT, AND NEED NOT, CONSULT OUTSIDE SOURCES.
